Course Description

Medical Law and Ethics is a fascinating area to study dealing with some of the most contested and controversial issues of our time; assisted dying, abortion, and embryo research to name three. New technologies such as stem cell research, face transplants and pre-implantation genetic testing have attracted considerable media and public interest. In order to study medical law at this level, it is essential to also consider the ethical issues which under pin questions about how we should regulate controversial medical practices. This course requires students to use sophisticated analytical skills in evaluating complex legal and ethical dilemmas and to challenge their own and others’ received wisdom while becoming aware of the importance of providing defensible reasons for their views.

The Course Is Composed of 4 Modules

Module A: Basic concepts in medical law;
Module B: Access to treatment and malpractice litigation;
Module C: Legal and ethical issues in medical practice;
Module D: Legal and ethical issues in reproduction.

About Module A ‘Basics Concepts in Medical Law

The aim of this course is to provide an advanced Masters-level grounding in medical law and ethics. This course goes beyond the standard undergraduate optional course by requiring students to acquire and utilize sophisticated analytical skills in evaluating complex legal and ethical dilemmas. In general, Module A introduces core concepts in medical law, gives a guide to ethical decision-making, and covers some of the basic building-blocks of medical law, such as consent, capacity, and confidentiality. 

Material Required

We will provide you with required study guides written by eminent UoL professors and leaders in the field, in addition to up to date reading materials, including articles and case laws. Students registered in the LLM program will receive additional textbooks and will be assisted with additional sessions focusing on past UoL-LLM examinations.

Dr (J) Bilal Badr

Judge

Dr. Bilal Badr is a Judge and a councilor at the Accusation Chamber of Beirut, handling all cases of medical malpractice since 2014. He is specialized in private international law, civil and penal law, and have investigated the applicable law on e-commerce contractual disputes for his PhD thesis, and the civil liability for professionals (especially lawyers) for his master’s thesis. 

He is an associate professor at multiple universities in Lebanon, lecturing on topics of penal procedures, private penal law, civil trials, civil liability, and real estate; supervisor and first reader for masters and PhD theses. He is also a classified researcher; published numerous studies and thought pieces on topics ranging from civil professional liability to penal procedures, and has often been delegated by the Lebanese government to represent Lebanon at various forums and seminars in the region (Jordan, Tunisia) and abroad (France, Austria, Bulgaria). Dr. Bilal Badr is a member of the Administrative Board of the Lebanese Judges Association.
