Course Description

This course will provide you with the required skills to analyze the theory of international natural resources law and its practical application through a critical assessment of relevant literature and the jurisprudence of international courts and tribunals.

The course begins by dealing with the fundamental notion of and general issues in international natural resources law and then looks at some specific issues relating to the management of natural resources. The course also covers international energy law and the Energy Charter Treaty and the energy and climate policies of the European Union.

The Course Is Composed of 4 Modules

Module A: General aspects of international natural resources law;
Module B: Specific issues relating to the management of natural resources;
Module C: International Energy law;
Module D: Energy law in Europe.

About Module A ‘General Aspects Of International Natural Resources Law

Module A introduces some general features of international natural resources law. It covers the notion of permanent sovereignty over natural resources from historical, legal and socio-political perspectives. In addition, it presents the role of international institutions, such as, the United Nations in the governance of natural resources, besides presenting the approaches to natural resources management in national legislation. The module features interests in defining the limits of ownership and possession of natural resources, and the extent to which international law acts to protect foreign investment in the natural resources. It also provides information on the definition and limits of property rights in the natural resources sector.

Material Required

We will provide you with required study guides written by eminent UoL professors and leaders in the field, in addition to up to date reading materials, including articles and case laws. Students registered in the LLM program will receive additional textbooks and will be assisted with additional sessions focusing on past UoL-LLM examinations.

Any professional interested in the international law of natural resources will enjoy the course. The course is attractive to students, academics and researchers with legal and environmental backgrounds, such as, lawyers, law students, environmentalists, and environmental sciences students. Dr. CHRISTINA I. ABI HAIDAR

Member of The Beirut Bar Association

Dr. Christina Abi Haidar is a practicing Attorney (member of the Beirut Bar Association), consultant to several companies, and legal expert for several International organizations. She holds a Bachelor of Law Degree with Distinction, an MA in International Law, and pursuing her PhD thesis in International Relations and diplomacy.

With more than a decade of broad experience in the legal field, she is specialized in the legal, and regulatory aspects of oil and gas, energy, water and environmental policies, contracts, and legislations and regulatory frame works in Lebanon and in the MENA region. She Worked in close coordination with several ministries and stakeholders in several projects related to law amendments, drafting policies and project implementation.

Dr. Christina Abi Haidar is a member of Energy and Water Committee at BBA, a member of Green Building National Committee at LIBNOR, a member in IUCN world commission environmental law and a part time instructor at LAU and AUT.

Dr. Christina Abi Haidar participated and lead in the drafting of several laws, decrees, and regulations.
She is a development and governance specialist with an in-depth knowledge and a wide experience with Lebanese municipal and administrative laws and regulations, and concentrated specialization in public private partnerships PPP, throughout several consultancies and assignments with different ministries in Lebanon and in the region.

She has written and co-authored numerous articles on matters associated with energy, environmental topics, governance and PPP and took part in professional conferences and other events relating to afore mentioned topics.
