Course Description
International Environmental Law is one of the most interesting and developing areas of Public International Law. In this course, you will learn about the development of environmental law from this point onwards. The course will deal with the legal implications of certain environmental actions, in the context of International Law generally as well as International Environmental Law. Related case law of international courts and tribunals are also important in this topic. A very extensive course, examining all the possible angles and new developments, aiming to enhance your understanding of the importance of international environmental regulations.

Module A: General aspects of international environmental law 1;
Module B: General aspects of international environmental law 2;
Module C: Particular subjects of international environmental law I;
Module D: Particular subjects of international environmental law II.

Judge Makhoul has a Law degree from the University of the Holy Spirit – Kaslik, and has also completed Superior Studies Degree in Public Law from the Lebanese University.
Judge Makhoul served as a member of the court of first instance in North Lebanon, as a Judge in Batroun and Douma, and a Judge (penal matters) at the Beirut Court, and has been appointed since 2017 and serves as an investigative judge in Mount Lebanon.
Judge Makhoul is an expert in Environmental Law and taught for several years many related courses at the USEK faculties of Law and Business, where she has also been a Member of the faculty’s Council for two years.
About Module A ‘General aspects of international environmental law 1’
Module A deals with the fundamental notion of international environmental law (IEL) which underlines the concept of sustainable development. The Module analyzes all material and procedural elements of sustainable development. It takes into account the particular features of IEL-making and also introduces i) the institutional structure of international environmental governance and ii) the role of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, individuals and indigenous groups. Course audience will gain an understanding of the historical development of IEL and study landmark events and cases in its development.
We will provide you with required study guides written by eminent UoL professors and leaders in the field, in addition to up to date reading materials, including articles and case laws. Students registered in the LLM program will receive additional textbooks and will be assisted with additional sessions focusing on past UoL-LLM examinations.
